The rice we refers here to is the rice at field (brown rice or rough rice), not yet manufactured, brown colored and protected by the hard shells which will be removed after the next operations. The italian term is "risone" (large rice). Some years ago, I thought to illustrate to my students the dependence and independence of statistical variables through the example of a relationship between the yearly rice production in China and the grams of tobacco smoked at the "Pipe Slow-Smoke World Championship". I never have been able to find the relative data and so confirm an assumed correlation. Here I've found the rough-rice ten best and worse producer countries and the first ten classified smokers at the "16th World Cup in Pipesmoking for Team" held in Monastier (Treviso, Italy) on October 18, 2015. I learned that in such a championship the tobacco is fixed to 3 grams and the duration of the smoking (with only max two ignitions within the first minute) is measured. As you can see from the data, the winner smoked through 3h:10m:25s with 3 grams of tobacco! And the two variables are correlated, also if they are fully independent. __________________________________________________________________________ Rice production data taken from http://www.colturaecultura.it/content/riso-nel-mondo (page 612;visited March 28, 2016).
