JJA bands: The digitized JJA Alpine temperature series inserted in the background of warm and cold (pink and light blue bands) periods and solar minima (yellow bands). Also the Modern Solar Maximum (M.M., light green, 1914-2008 CE) has been defined. Please note the variety of situations during solar minima: Oort corresponds to a strong drop of temperature; Wolf to almost continuous rise across the zero-value of anomaly; Spörer to the same as Wolf but at lower average temperature; Maunder and Dalton to heavy drops, again. As well known, the LIA (here 1350-1850 CE) has been characterized by several (also strong) fluctuations of temperature, well visible in the plot. To be noted, also, that three of the five solar minima took place within the LIA, suggesting a strong interaction between atmosphere and Sun.
