Indices of extreme events
NOAA produces several indices of exteme events at
https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/extremes/
namely:
North America Climate Extremes Monitoring (NACEM)
This web site is being established in an effort to improve the scientific
understanding of observed changes in extreme climate conditions.
Twelve indices to climate change study are provided. The indices
are based on daily temperature values or daily precipitation amount.
U.S. Climate Extremes Index (CEI)
The U.S. Climate Extremes Index (CEI) was developed to quantify
observed changes in climate within the contiguous United States.
Time series graphs and data files of the CEI (from 1910 to the
present) are available for the following periods: Annual, Spring,
Summer, Autumn, Winter, Cold Season, Warm Season and Hurricane Season.
Elements included in the index include: Temperature, Precipitation and PDSI.
National Climate Extremes Committee (NCEC)
Established in 1997 the NCEC's main goal is to assess the
scientific merit of extreme climatological/meteorological events.
U.S. State Climate Extremes Committee (SCEC)
The State Climate Extremes Committee (SCEC) was created in 2006
in response to the need for proper and comprehensive evaluation
of meteorological observations which may have tied or exceeded
existing statewide all-time record values.
U.S. Climate Extremes
Locations and values of climatological extremes in the U.S.
U.S. Streaks
Stations that experience consecutive days with temperature/precipitation
values which exceed or fall short of various thresholds
U.S. Billion-Dollar Weather and Climate Disasters
Information and interactive tools on economic losses, deaths, and
other impacts for U.S. weather and climate disasters where overall
damages/costs reached or exceeded $1 billion
U.S. Records
Daily Weather Record tool built using climate and weather data
from Climate Data Online (CDO)
